My name is Christa Engl. I am 64 years old and have been volunteering for 16 years. Volunteering allows me to use my strengths to get involved socially and meet a variety of interesting people.
At the beginning of my professional career, I was a lecturer in the senior citizens' recreation center "Bruno Taut" in Britz. Later I became a part-time self-employed lecturer. In the following voluntary work, I was active for seven years for the visiting service of the district office Treptow-Köpenick.
„During this time, I realized how little socially integrated and lonely many senior citizens were, even on their birthdays. That awakened the desire to change something and actively help people communicate digitally with their loved ones.“
I found this opportunity in the senior Internet café "Weltenbummler" in Pankow, which I am running for six years now. The Seniors Internet Café is a project of the Seniors Office "Am Puls" of the Humanist Association Berlin-Brandenburg. In a world that is becoming increasingly digital, it is often an insurmountable hurdle, especially for our older fellow citizens, to get to grips with topics relating to the Internet, smartphones, and tablets. That is where I come in with a team of volunteer instructors at "Weltenbummler”.
